Euro 2012 or to give it its official title - The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, will be the 14th European Championship for European national football teams. The tournament will be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8th June 2012 and 1st July 2012 – the first time that either nation has hosted the tournament. The matches will be played in 8 cities, 4 in each country. The cities and stadia in Ukraine are - Kiev (Olympic Stadium – Capacity 65,720), Kharkiv (Metalist Stadium – Capacity 38,500), Donetsk (Donbass Arena - Capacity 50,055), Lviv (Arena Lviv – Capacity 34,915). The cities and stadia in Poland are – Warsaw (National Stadium – Capacity 58,145), Poznan (Municipal Stadium – Capacity 42,004), Gdansk (PGE Arena – Capacity 40,818, Wroclaw (Municipal Stadium – Capacity 40,610). The final will be played at the Olympic Stadium, Kiev. Sixteen teams have qualified for the final from a total of 51 countries – Ukraine and Poland as host countries qualify automatically. The teams have been drawn from 4 seeding pots and the following groups of teams will contest the initial league part of the competition with the top 2 from each group going onto the quarter final. Group A – Poland, Greece, Russia, Czech Republic. Group B – Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal. Group C – Spain, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Croatia. Group D – Ukraine, Sweden, France, England. The 1.4 million tickets for the 31 tournament matches received over 12 million applications – a 17% increase on the 2008 finals, and an all-time record for the UEFA European Championship. Due to this over-subscription for the matches, lotteries were carried out to allocate tickets. The official logo for the tournament is based on Wycinanki, the traditional art of paper cutting practised in Poland and rural areas of Ukraine, and an art form which symbolises the nature of the rural areas of both countries. The official mascots of the games will be two cheery fans - Slavek and Slavko. The good news for some TLD staff, who are passionate Scotland fans, is the tournament will be extended to 24 teams for Euro 2016 to be held in France.
