Climate – mild and temperate maritime climate, with mean annual temperatures ranging from 10 °C (50 °F) in the south to 16 °C (61 °F) in the north. Voltage guide 230V-240V. Dialing code 64. New Zealand is located in the south west Pacific Ocean and comprises two large islands – north and south, and many smaller islands. The land was one of the last places on earth to be inhabited by humans with the earliest settlers dating back to 1250 with the first known European, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, arriving in 1642. The country has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and includes: high mountains, glacier landscapes, large rivers, sweeping beaches, hot springs, giant kauri tree forests, and trout filled lakes. Amongst this scenery are some unique examples of flora and fauna including – southern beech and the famous flightless kiwi bird. The country has managed to preserve its Maori culture which stems from early Polynesian settle influences. The city of Rotorua is a particularly good area to see Maori music and traditions. However, arguably the most famous example of Maori culture is the Haka – the ancestrak war dance an cry performed by the All Blacks rugby team at the start of international games. The main cities include - Auckland - "The City of Sails" - largest and most populated conurbation. Wellington - the national capital, also known as "The Windy City", Hamilton - 128 km (80 miles) south of Auckland, and sited on the banks of the mighty Waikato River, Rotorua - famous for Maori culture, and geysers, Napier The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in "Art Deco” style, Nelson -geographic centre of the country and surrounded by stunning coastal and mountain scenery, Christchurch - The Garden City and the Air Gateway to Antarctica, Queenstown - adrenalin and adventure capital of the world, where you can skydive, bungy jump, and jet-boat, and Dunedin - the Edinburgh of the South, proud of its Scots heritage. With so many attractions it’s very hard to single out a single one. However, on a visit to New Zealand in 2005 this author travelled all over the North Island from Auchland to Rotoru and Wellington up to the 90 mile breach. In this author’s opinion the highlight attraction was the Waipoua Forest with the its giant kauri trees including Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere the largest two Kauri trees in the world.
