3rd Arrondissement is located on the right bank of the River Seine and is home to arguably the quieter part of the old Le Marais district. A fascinating attraction for visitors is the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers the first monoplane prototype, and Foucault's Pendulum, named after the French physicist Léon Foucault, and demonstrates the rotation of the Earth. Principal attractions include – the house of Nicolas Flamel, the Musée Cognacq-Jay, and the Musée Carnavalet. The Marais was also home to Maximilien Robespierre, a key figure during the French Revolution – know to his supporters as "The Incorruptible", where as his enemies called him the "Tyrant". Situated on the right bank of the River Seine, it is the second smallest in area after the 2nd arrondissement. The arrondissement contains the northern, quieter part of the medieval district of Le Marais. The oldest surviving private house of Paris, built in 1407, is to be found in the 3rd arrondissement, along the rue de Montmorency.
A quieter part of the ancient Marais neighborhood which is centered in the 4th, the 3rd is possibly one of the best places to live in Paris. There are several good open air markets, a gigantic covered flea market, and lots of great speciality food stores, especially along rue de Bretagne.
