Bregenz is the capital of the state of Vorarlberg, on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). The first evidence of a settlement at Bregenz dates from 1500 BC. Following the inevitable Roman influence Bregenz, in later years, experienced influence from the Habsburgs, under Bavarian rule. Landmark buildings of Bregenz include Martins Tower, St. Gallus Church, the Art House, and the Post Office Building. Another building, the Lake Promenade, is a well known meeting point for local philosophers, politicians, writers and musicians. Other places to experience include: The Festival and Congress centre; Theater am Kornmarkt; casino; harbour; and the cable car up the Pfänder mountain.

Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg, the westernmost federal state of Austria. Lake Constance or Lake of Constance (German and Alemannic Bodensee) is a large lake on the Rhine between Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The freshwater lake sits at 395 m above sea level and is Central Europe's third largest, after Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. It is 63 km long, and at its widest point, nearly 14 km.
Vorarlberg is the westernmost state (Land) of Austria. As there are several notable mountain ranges in Vorarlberg, such as the Silvretta, the Rätikon, the Verwall and the Arlberg, there are many famous skiing regions. The highest mountain is Piz Buin, whose rocky peak of 3,312 meters is surrounded by glaciers.
