Darwin is the capital and largest city of Northern Territory, Australia. Darwin has a distinct dry and wet season and is known for spectacular lightning storms. During its history the city has been virtually rebuilt two times, after Japanese air raids during World War II and again after being destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Aboriginal people were the first inhabitants of the Darwin area. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Dutch in the 1600s to be followed by the British in 1839. Darwin experienced real growth when gold was discovered at Pine Creek, south of the city, in 1871. Along with gold Darwin has expanded its mining and energy industry and with zinc, bauxite, manganese and offshore oil and natural gas main components of this industry. Visitors to Darwin can travel by plane, sea, or by The Ghan, a tourist train that crosses the continent from Adelaide to Darwin. Intrepid visitors can also come by car via The Stuart Highway. Places to go include: Darwin Wharf Precinct; Adelaide River War Cemetery; Aviation Heritage Centre; Fannie Bay Gaol; Charles Darwin National Park; and Lake Alexander.
