Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi First Business and Economy Class Deals Discount and Promotions for Flights to Dublin Ireland and beyond

Abu Dhabi. Pop. 621,000. Currency - UAE dirham (AED). Language - Arabic. Time Zone GMT + 4 hours. Main Airport – Abu Dhabi International Airport AUH. Best Time to go – from November to February when it is cool to cold and good for strolling along the city cornice. Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second largest city of the UAE United Arab Emirates - the largest city is Dubai. The city is home to the offices of the UAE federal government and the president of the country. The city is situated on an island which juts into the Persian Gulf – and is connected to the mainland by the - Maqta, Mussafah, and Sheikh Zayed Bridges. Archaeological studies indicate evidence of early settlements from the 3rd millennium BC, although there is some debate about the origin of the name Abu Dhabi – although the meaning is "Father of Deer", which may refer to gazelle or more likely Dhibaa (deers) which inhabit the emirate. In the early 19th century, as a result of treaties (known as "truces" which gave the coast its name of Trucial Coast) Abu Dhabi and the other Trucial States (including Dubai) entered into agreement with Great Britain. During this time the main industry was pearl fishing, which declined prior to the discovery of oil in the early 1930s. Exploration and production followed and both onshore and offshore fields were developed including - Bu Hasa, Zakum, Asab, Sahil, Shah, al-Bunduq, and Abu al-Bukhoosh. This oil wealth has made Abu Dhabi the wealthiest emirate of the UAE in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and per capita income. However, what is somewhat surprising is that non gas and petroleum GDP makes up over 60% of the UAE GDP - This is reflected in Abu Dhabi with substantial new investment in industry, real estate, tourism and retail. Rival city Dubai has led the way with non oil and gas GDP – although it has much less hydrocarbon reserves than Abu Dhabi. The city has long been regarded as a somewhat traditional staid administrative community. However, with the passing away of long-term ruler Sheikh Zayed in 2004 – his son Sheikh Khalifa took over and radical changes were made to attract overseas tourism and investment. Changes included land sales to foreigners and loosening of restrictions on alcohol. Abu Dhabi has also seen some major construction projects such as - Formula 1 track, Ferrari theme park, and Saadiyat Island cultural zone. The Abu Dhabi Plan 2030 has also encouraged the development of tall buildings which will lead to the construction of many new skyscrapers over the next decade, particularly with the expansion of Abu Dhabi's CBD Central Business District. Amongst the high buildings the city has some stand out sites - Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Corniche Waterfront, Khalifa Park, Yas Island, Lulu Islands to name a few. The city is also a shopaholics dream - Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall, Al Wahda Mall, and Khalidiya Mall will entice no doubt entice the compulsive shopper.
