Alexandria is the 2nd largest city in Egypt and is the largest seaport. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC. The city is located on the Mediterranean coastline and it’s strategic location on the route to the Red Sea built up it’s trading importance. Historically, Alexandria was the early capital of Egypt and with that status came grand buildings and structures including: the Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World); the Library of Alexandria (the largest library in the ancient world); and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages). The city is a main summer resort for the Middle East, with the Maa'moura Beach and Montaza Beach acting as magnets for sun-worshippers. The best time to visit Alexandria is in spring (March-June) and and autumn (September-November), since it's at its busiest in summer, when Egyptians escape the searing heat of Cairo and southern areas of the country.

It was based on guide-books popular among Hellenic (Greek) tourists and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. Later lists include those for the Medieval World and the Modern World.
