Amman. Pop. 2,419,000. State Capital Governorate. Currency Jordanian dinar (JOD). Time Zone (GMT + 3 hrs). Main Airport Amman Queen Alia AMM. Best time to go spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) avoiding the hottest summer temperatures. Amman is one of the largest cities in the middle east and is located in a hilly part of north west Jordan. The city is developing as a regional hub in communications, transportation, medical tourism, education, and investment. It has also found new importance as the conduit for business dealings with Iraq. Alongside this recent development the city has an interesting historical past and visitors should take time to visit The Citadel, Roman Theatre, Roman-era Nymphaeum, Temple of Herakles, National Archaeological Museum, and Rainbow St. It is well worth taking time to explore the Citadel at sunset which will give a good view of the city. Good shopping areas can be found at: The Balad; The Souk; and Wakalat Street. Souvenirs to look for are: A keffiyeh (traditional checkered headpiece of Jordanian men), hand-crafted Jordanian daggers, and hand-made Bedouin-style embroidered clothing. A tasty snack to have when exploring the city is a Shwarma (cooked lamb meat with a special sauce rolled in piece of flat bread).
