The capital of the Netherlands is located on two waterways the Amstel river and the IJ Bay. Originally Amsterdam was a small fishing village in the 12th century but expanded largely on trade with the cities of the Baltic and North Sea countries. This trading expertise expanded with ships setting out from Amsterdam to the Baltic Sea, North America, Africa and present-day Indonesia and Brazil forming the basis of a worldwide trading network. Amsterdam and the Netherlands through their trading companies developed the foundations of the Dutch colonies and Amsterdam became one of the worlds leading financial centres. From the 17th century Amsterdam developed the fine buildings, and concentric, semi-circular canals ("grachten") that characterise the Amsterdam of today. Although Amsterdam is officially designated as the capital of the Netherlands, it has never been (save a brief period between 1808 and 1810) the seat of the court, government, or parliament of the Netherlands, which are all located at The Hague. Amsterdam is famous for many outstanding museums, including the Rijksmuseum, (The Night Watch by Rembrandt is a must see), the Stedelijk Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, and its world famous orchestra, the Concertgebouworkest. The Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings in the world. Amsterdam is also famous for its red-light district, de Wallen, which is located in the centre of the city along major canals. Near de Wallen coffee shops sell cannabis. This is not completely legal but is tolerated when small quantities of cannabis are involved. Amsterdam is an extremely popular destination for visitors from all over Europe especially UK Scotland and Ireland who appreciate the tolerance and laid back atmosphere.
