Antalya is the largest city on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, and is the hub of the Turkish Riviera. Development and investment in tourist infrastructure, initiated in the 1970s, have transformed Antalya into a major international resort. In 2007, Antalya Airport's number of passengers on international flights surpassed the total number at Istanbul Ataturk Airport and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport for the first time, and the city officially earned the title of "the capital of Turkish tourism". There are many attractions for the visitors not least of which is the abundance of historical buildings and sites including: Kaleici (The historical center of the city); Hadrian's Gate (also known as Triple Gate); Kesik Minare (Broken Minaret); and Yivli Minare (Fluted Minaret). The city is also home to sites with Lycian, Pamphylian, and Hellenistic, but mainly Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures. New hotels have sprung up in and around the city, and along the coast above the Konyaalti and Lara beaches.
