Antwerp has long been an important port, second only to Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port. Antwerp is located on the River Scheldt estuary and has access to excellent road and rail links to the interior of Europe. This maritime importance also helped to create Antwerp’s diamond trading industry, indeed Antwerp claims to be the "world's leading diamond city". As more than 70% of he world’s diamonds are traded in Antwerp this is not an idle boast. The 16th century heralded the start of the rise of Antwerp, which coincided with the "Age of Exploration". During this time ships and merchants arrived and traded goods as diverse as: pepper; cinnamon; American silver; and textiles. Antwerp suffered severe damage during World War II with the port a key target due to allied shipping being there. With it’s trading influence Antwerp also developed as centre for culture and arts with some notable artists being born in the city including: Frans Floris; Frans Snyders; Frans Hals; Caspar de Crayer; and Anthony van Dyck.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) was a Flemish artist who became the leading court painter in England. He is most famous for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family and court, painted with a relaxed elegance that was to be the dominant influence on English portrait-painting for the next 150 years.
