Aremenia is a small country on the edge of Eastern Europe located between the Black and Caspian seas and occupies a strategic position between Asia and Europe. The country is mountainous although the former highest mountain, Mount Ararat, is now in Turkey. Mount Ararat is where, according to the Bible, Noah’s Arc landed. Armenia has a large diaspora, numbering some 8 million compared to the country population of 3 million. This diaspora provide much needed inward investment to bolster the economy. Armenia is very dependent on imported fuel and energy, mainly from Russia with a small amount of power produced from domestic hydro electricity. The principal regions in the country are: Central Armenia; Lake Sevan Region; Northern Armenia; Southern Armenia; and Nagorno-Karabakh. The main cities are: Yerevan (Capital); Gyumri; Vanadzor; and Dilijan.

Mount Ararat is the tallest peak in Turkey. This snow-capped, dormant volcanic cone is located in the Idr Province, near the northeast corner of Turkey, 16 km (10 mi) west of the Iranian and 32 km (20 mi) south of the Armenian border.
