Asuncion is the capital and largest city, of Paraguay. It is one of the oldest cities in South America and many expeditions set off from Asuncion to found other cities in neighbouring countries. Paraguay became independent in 1811 and during the presidency of Carlos Antonio López both Asunción (and Paraguay) progressed, as the new president implemented radical economic policies. Afer his death, his son Francisco Solano López became the new president and led Paraguay into the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance, which resulted in the loss of two thirds of the country's population. Both the city and country struggled to establish economic growth after the war but an economic boom developed in the 1970’s which has been consolidated with a rise in administrative and financial activity.

Asunción (full name: Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción), population 1,212,112 (2002), is the capital of Paraguay. It is the home of the national government, principal port, chief industrial and cultural centre of the country. Local manufacturing production includes footwear, textiles, and tobacco products.
Asuncion is a large city situated approximately 250 km north of the confluence of the Parana and Paraguay rivers, however the rivers play a very small part in daily activity. The main streets are paved but only one or two blocks off the main arteries the streets are dirt or "cobble stones." Downtown has many tall and modern buildings, but some date to the 1800s.
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport is Paraguay's main national and international gateway, located at Luque, suburb of the capital Asunción. The airport is named after the Paraguayan aviator Silvio Pettirossi. It was formerly known as Presidente General Stroessner Airport, after Paraguay's former dictator Alfredo Stroessner.
The War of the Triple Alliance, also known as the Paraguayan War, was fought from 1864 to 1870, and was by some measures the bloodiest war in the history of the Americas. It was fought between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.
