Asuncion. Pop. 512,112. Currency Guarani. Language Spanish. Time Zone GMT - 4 hours. Silvio Pettirossi International Airport ASU. Best Time to go – May to September. Asuncion is the capital and largest city, of Paraguay. It is one of the oldest cities in South America and many expeditions set off from Asuncion to found other cities in neighbouring countries. Paraguay became independent in 1811 and during the presidency of Carlos Antonio López both Asunción (and Paraguay) progressed, as the new president implemented radical economic policies. Afer his death, his son Francisco Solano López became the new president and led Paraguay into the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance, which resulted in the loss of two thirds of the country's population. Both the city and country struggled to establish economic growth after the war but an economic boom developed in the 1970’s which has been consolidated with a rise in administrative and financial activity.
