Athens is a famous city and is the birthplace of the ancient Greek culture and played an integral role in the development of European Civilization. The city is divided into a number of districts: The Acropolis (ancient "high city" of Athens); Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio (charming historic districts at the foot of the Acropolis); Kifissia (northern part of Athens, rarely visited by tourists); Nea Smyrni (southern part of Athens); Kolonaki (upscale residential area); Omonia and Exarheia (home the National Archeaological Museum); Pangrati and Mets (not a big tourist area); Piraeus (ancient port of Athens with connections to Crete and the Aegean Islands; Psiri (former industrial district, now full cafés, bars, and small shops; and Syntagma Square (business district of Athens, complete with major hotels, banks, and offices). Many first time visitors to Athens will see a large sprawling city. However, there are numerous places to see which reflect the ancient Greek culture. In particular the areas at the foot of the Acropolis, Anafiotika, Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio are home to many excellent Neoclassical buildings, trendy and traditional cafes and shops, narrow winding streets, and great views of the Acropolis. Getting around Anthems has improved greatly in recent years in part due to the improved transport infrastructure that was built for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
