Athens International Airport (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV) is located about 20 km (12 miles) to the east of central Athens. The airport was opened in March 2001 to replace the now-closed Athens (Ellinikon) International Airport and is named after a former Greek prime-minister Eleftherios Venizelos. It is a major hub and base for Olympic Air, as well as Aegean Airlinesa and is able to handle the Airbus A380. The airport has also some awards frm the Airline industry including the prestigious European Airport of the Year – 2004. Ground transport includes: rails and road connections. There is a very convenient rail station next to the main terminal which is served by both the Athens Metro and Suburban rail service Proastiakos. Athens airport has a dedicated airport hotel - Sofitel Athens Airport Hotel and some hotels close by including: Holiday Inn Athens-Attica Avenue; and Avra Airport Hotel.

Eleftherios Venizelos (23 August 1864 – 18 March 1936) was an eminent Greek revolutionary, a prominent and illustrious statesman as well as a charismatic leader in the early 20th century. Athens airport is named after him.
