Best Time to go All year round destination, although warmer weather is between November and February. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, but not the capital as that title is held by Wellington. It is located in the northern part of North Island and is made of 4 main districts - Auckland City, Manukau - South and outer east Auckland, Waitakere - West Auckland, and North Shore. The city lies on Waitemata Harbour, is close to the Hauraki Gulf and is known as the "City of Sails" due to the huge numer of yachts and sailing craft that fill the harbor areas in the city. The city has some significant attractions and the principal ones include - Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand National Maritime Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Zoo, Auckland Harbour Bridge, The StarDome Observatory, and MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology). However, the most noticeable feature is the Sky Tower which is 328 metres (1,076 ft) tall, making it, currently, the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. If you are feeling brave you can jump of the the tower by using the 'SkyJump', which is a cable controlled jump from the observation deck. The city is also a famous rugby union venue and is home to the Blues (formerly the Auckland Blues) professional New Zealand rugby union team. The Blues play at Eden Park which was also the venue for the 2011 Rugby World Cup final and is the biggest capacity sports venue in the country. Outside of the city theer are some excellent viewpoints including - the volcanic island of Rangitoto that stands prominently near the entrance to the Waitemata Harbour, and the Waitakere Ranges.
