Voltage guide 110V. Dialing code +1 246. Barbados is an island situated off the northeast coast of Venezuela. It has a long association with Britain who first colonized the island in 1627 and a largely agricultural economy was established with the primary crops being sugar, rum, and molasses. It was not until 1966 that Barbados became an independent country and in the following years stable democracy was established along with tourism and manufacturing. The island is split into 5 areas: Bridgetown (includes he capital city and the St. Michael Parish); Central Barbados (includes the parishes of St. George, St. Thomas and parts of St. Joseph, St. John, St. Lucy and St. Andrew. Harrison Cave); Eastern Barbados, (located on the rugged Atlantic side of the island and home to Crane Beach); Western Barbados, (situated on the calm, Caribbean Sea side of the island); Southern Barbados, (includes St. Lawrence Gap, a lively area full of bars and restaurants, and Grantley Adams International Airport). A distinctive icon in Barbados is the 'Flying Fish' and tourists will see it displayed on – coins, menus, and signs. The actual fish is usually served breaded and fried with a 'weapons grade' very hot yellow sauce.

The name "Barbados" comes from a Portuguese explorer named Pedro Campos in 1536, who originally called the island Los Barbados ("The Bearded Ones"), after the appearance of the island's fig trees, whose long hanging aerial roots resembled beards.
