Basel is located in north-west Switzerland on the river Rhine and due to it’s strategic location it’s origins extend back before Roman times. Development of the city grew culminating in Basel joining the fledgling Swiss Confederation in 1499. Access to the Rhine (Basel is the only port in Switzerland) helped the city to develop it’s industrial power especially in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. The Swiss chemical industry operates largely from Basel, with Novartis, Syngenta, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Clariant, and Hoffmann-La Roche having their headquarteres there. Basel has strong sporting connections: Tennis Ace Roger Federer is from the area and the St. Jakob-Park stadium will host some of the matches in Euro 2008.
