The Beaufort scale is measurement for describing wind velocity based mainly on observed sea conditions. The scale of thirteen classes (zero to twelve) now describes both land and sea wind conditions where 0 allows smoke to rise vertically and 12 represents Hurricane Scale.

The Beaufort scale is an empirical measure for describing wind velocity based mainly on observed sea conditions. Its full name is the Beaufort wind force scale. The scale was created in 1805 by Irishman Sir Francis Beaufort, a British admiral and hydrographer.
