Belize. Pop. 287,730. Capital Belmopan. Largest city Belize City. Language English. Currency Belizean Dollar. (BZD). Located on the eastern coast of Central America on the Caribbean and between the Hondo and Sarstoon rivers with borders with Mexico and Guatemala. The north of Belize contains flat marshy plains with areas of heavy forests. The southern area contains the Maya mountain range including Victoria Peak (3,675 feet, 1,120 m) which is the highest point in Belize. The Caribbean coast holds a coral barrier reef stretching some 200 miles and is the second longest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. Belize was formerly a British colony but became independent in 1981 but remains the only english speaking country in Central America. The Belize economy is mainly based on agriculture with sugar the main crop. Recently oil has been discovered in the Cayo District and the country is developing many exciting activity based tourist businesses. Tourism activities include – hiking, canoeing, pot-holing, exploring Mayan ruins, diving, angling for tarpon, snapper, barracuda and bonefish.

It was named for now-deceased politician Phillip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson.
