Berlin is the capital and largest city of the Federal Republic of Germany. The city is located in the north east of the country and is the main hub of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area. Between 1961-1989 Berlin was split by the Berlin Wall and the city of Bonn was assigned capital city status of the then West Germany. After the removal of the wall Berlin has consolidated it’s position as a major hub of European politics, culture, media, and science. The city also specialises in hi-tec industry including: traffic engineering; optoelectronics; IT; vehicle manufacturing; health care; biomedical engineering; and biotechnology. Berlin is divided into many districts and areas including: Mitte (historical center of Berlin); Charlottenburg (heart of western city; Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (popular with left wing youth culture and artists); Prenzlauer Berg (a hip and trendy area); Schöneberg (nice residential area; Zehlendorf (green and wealthy area); Ku'Damm (a top shopping street); and Potsdamer Platz (area once divided by the Berlin Wall). For visitors there are many major sights in Berlin including: Brandenburg Gate; Deutsches Historisches Museum; Pergamonmuseum; Berliner Dom; Reichstag; Berliner Fernsehturm; Europa Center; Berlin Wall (remains); Checkpoint Charlie; Berlin Zoo; Tiergarten Park; Schlosspark Charlottenburg; and Wannsee (lake). Berlin is one of the most spacious cities in Europe but it is easy to get around on the excellent bus, tram, train and underground services. The Tageskarte day card or the Berlin WelcomeCard are handy if you are doing a lot of travelling in the city. For visitors who enjoy exotic drinks, Berlin is a haven for cocktail bars especially in the districts of Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg. Most young people (under 40) speak english but visitors should learn a few key german phrases.
