Berlin Schonefeld International Airport (IATA: SXF, ICAO: EDDB) is locates 18 km (11 miles) southeast of Berlin, near the town of Schönefeld in Brandenburg State. Historically, Schönefeld was the main civilian airport for East Germany (GDR), whereas today, it is the smaller of the two Berlin airports. The airport has seen an increase in passenger numbers with the introduction of low cost carriers such as EasyJet and Germanwings. Schönefeld will also be an integral part of the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport which will be the principal international airport for Berlin. The new airport will greatly decrease the amount of aircraft noise within the city. The Airport is served by Berlin Schönefeld Flughafen railway station, a short walking distance from the airport terminal. There are some good value hotels near the airport including: Leonardo Airport Hotel and Airporthotel Fontane. Most of these hotels have airport shuttle buses although not all will be free of charge.
