Berlin Tegel International Airport (IATA: TXL, ICAO: EDDT) is located 8 km (5.0 miles) north of Berlin, in the district of Tegel, a part of the northern borough of Reinickendorf. Currently Tegel is the principal airport for Berlin although this title will move to the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. Tegel Airport was built to handle the Berlin Airlift in 1948 on a site that was originally used for 1930s rocket research in the 1930s. At that time, it was the longest runway in Europe at 2,428 metres or 7,966 feet. The airport is linked by a number of BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe - Berlin Transportation Company) bus lines, which offer connections to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, as well as to Regional Express trains and long distance trains. Rooms are completely soundproofed, so the noise from the airport is not at all an issue. Like many other airport hotels anywhere in the world, the Mecure offers free transport to and from the airport from early in the morning until late at night. However, don’t expect to spend much time on the shuttle as the hotel is literally at the airport.
