Most residents speak German but the canton of Berne has a small French speaking part. The city lies on the River Aare and was founded in 1191 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen. In 1353 Berne joined the young Swiss Confederation, becoming a leading member of the new state and it consolidated it’s administrative function by becoming the Swiss capital in 1848. Visitors to Berne will be intrigued with some varied attractions including: Zytglogge (an elaborate medieval clock tower with moving puppets); Münster (15th century Gothic cathedral); Garden of Roses; and the famous Bärengraben (Bear Pit). The bear is a symbol of Berne, and is featured on Berne's coat of arms. The Stade de Suisse Wankdorf is one of the venues for the Euro 2008 Football Competition.

The Zytglogge tower is a landmark medieval tower in Berne, Switzerland.
