Bora Bora is a Pacific Island island located in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The island is dominated by two extinct volcanic mountains Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, with the highest point at 727 metres (2,385 ft). Surrounding the island is a barrier reef and lagoon know as the Bora Bora Lagoonarium where divers can swim and come face to face with the dolphins, turtles, sharks, sting rays and numerous other fish. Along with diving and snorkeling there are some fantastic beaches to explore- the most famous beach being Matira Beach at the southern tip of the island. For visitors with a historical bent the island has a connection to the second world war as it was used as a supply base and was protected by 7 huge naval cannons – the gun emplacement ruins are still visible. Other activities include jeep tours and for the very fit, a hike to the summit of Mt. Pahia. Since the end of the second world war the island has grown into a major tourist destination and it's distinctive over-the-water bungalows on stilts have become popular with a wide range of guests including honeymoon couples. When leaving the island make sure you look and buy some Black Pearls - The "specialty" of Bora Bora.
