The Braemar Royal Highland Gathering is one of the most famous Highland Games in Scotland and is regularly attended by royalty including the Queen who is also the patron of the games. The games features a range of events including – highland dancing, pipe band competitions, track and field, and the Heavy events. The latter of these include – putting the stone, throwing the hammer, throwing weight for distance, throwing weight for height, and the famous Tossing the Caber. The caber is a long heavy log about the size of a medium sized telegraph pole, where the objective is to toss the caber, not for distance but for straightness.

Travel Quote: The traveller was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing". Daniel J. Boorstin.
