Bridgetown Pop. 96,578. Parish of Saint Michael. Currency Barbadian dollar (BBD), Language English. Time Zone GMT minus 4 hours. Main Airport Grantley Adams International Airport BGI. Best times to go Feb to May which avoids the rainy season. Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados and can trace it's origins back to 1628 when it was established by English settlers, the main attraction being the deep water harbour which was to become a major shipping and transhipment hub or the entire Eastern Caribbean and a major cruise ship homeport. To allow for larger cruise ships the harbour was dredged with the works completed in 2002. Due to it's long association with the UK many of the buildings and sites have distinctive English names such as - Queen's Park, The Lord Nelson Statue, Carlisle Bay Beach, and Cheapside Market. Although arguably the most quintessential construction to be found is the Kensington Oval (site of the 2007 Cricket World Cup final). However, there are monuments and buildings with a more Barbadian flavour such as - National Heroes Square (formerly Trafalgar Square) and Fountain Garden, Independence Square and The Independence Arch, Sagicor Plaza, and The Garrison Savannah and National Historic Area. Along with watching West Indies cricket another activity not to miss is live Caribbean music such as - Soca, Reggae, and Calypso.
