Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), (IATA: BGI, ICAO: TBPB) is situated 12.9 km (8 miles) from the centre of the capital city Bridgetown, in the parish of Christ Church, close to the southern tip of the island. The airport has direct service to destinations in the United States, Canada, Central America, South America and Europe and is a main gateway to the Eastern Caribbean. Prior to 1976 the airport was called Seawell Airport but was renamed to honour the first Premier of Barbados, Sir Grantley Herbert Adams. Ground transport is provided by taxi and a regular bus service. When using taxis it is advised to only use official airport taxis which bear the "Authorised Airport Taxi" logo, as un-official taxis may be poor-quality vehicles or may not adhere to official fares. As the airport is located in the south of the island some visitors may prefer to seek accommodation in Christ Church where there are a number of hotels and beach resorts including - The Crane Resort & Residences, Barbados Beach Club Hotel, Bougainvillea Beach Resort, and Coconut Court Beach Hotel.

Sir Grantley Herbert Adams, CMG, QC (April 28, 1898 – November 28, 1971) was a Barbadian and British West Indian politician. Adams became the first Premier of Barbados in 1958, as the island proceeded towards self-governance and then became the first and only Prime Minister of the West Indies Federation.
The Sir Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), (IATA: BGI, ICAO: TBPB) is found in Seawell, Christ Church on the island of Barbados. The former name of the airport was Seawell Airport before being dedicated in honor of the first Premier of Barbados, Sir Grantley Herbert Adams in 1976.
