Travel Tip July 08
When checking in, pick up the hotel's business card. In the most confusing of cities, the cards often come with a little map to get you home if you get lost.

Bruges. Pop. 117,000. Currency Euro. Language Dutch (Flemish). Time Zone GMT + 1 hour. Nearest airport – Brussels. Best Time to go – spring and autumn. Bruges is the largest city and capital of West Flanders. It’s historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. The city experienced a “Golden Age” in the 12th to 15th centuries where it’s safe city walls housed a wool market, a woollens weaving industry, and a developing lace market. The city harbour brought foreign traders from Genoa, Venice and Northern Europe. Maritime trade started to diminish with the rise of Antwerp with it’s larger port and Bruges became a backwater. Economic growth was stimulated with the construction in 1907 of the nearby port of Zeebrugge. Later success came in the form of international tourists looking to visit the great architecture and to experience the network of canals within the city. Having survived many of the ravages of World War II most of the Bruges medieval architecture is still intact. Notable examples of this architecture include: The Church of Our Lady; The Beguinage; Basilica of the Holy Blood; Sint-Salvator Cathedral; The Groeningemuseum; and The City Hall.
