Brussels. Pop. 1,024,492. Currency Euro. Language Dutch French (Brussels is a bilingual city). Time Zone GMT + 1 hour. Nearest airport – Brussels BRU. Best Time to go – all year round for tourist and diplomats. Brussels is both the largest city and capital of Belgium and is home to many of the institutions of the European Union EU including: European Commission; Council of the European Union; and the European Parliament. Brussels is also home to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). The city was founded about 979 and became an important trade route between the channel coast and what is now Germany. Along with trade Brussels became an important administrative and educational centre and the city started to host a number of prestigious conferences, conventions, world fairs, exhibitions, and events. Arguably the most important development in the history of Brussels was the enacting of the treaty of Rome in 1957 which established the European Economic Community EEC with Brussels established as the EEC, administrative centre. The EEC has since evolved into the EU European Union, which has further enhanced the importance of Brussels. Not surprisingly, there is a treasure trove of attractions for visitors including: Grand Place-Grote Markt (centre point); Manneken Pis (famous statue); Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog; Natural Sciences Museum of Belgium; Royal Museum for Central Africa; and the Atomium (iconic elemental structure). After all this political and cultural overload most visitors will like to quaff a Belgian beer or two. Belgium is one of the top beer countries in the world and it’s capital doesn’t disappoint with famous beer cafes including:Beer Circus, L'atelier, Moeder Lambic," and Delirium Café serving Stella, Hoegaarden, Leffe, Duvel, and White beer and a host of other ales.

Brussels - wikitravel

Brussels is the capital city of Belgium. As headquarters of many European institutions Brussels might also be considered something of a capital for the European Union. The fact, moreover, that Brussels acts as political capital of NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) serves to give the city a Transatlantic twist. Lying at the crossroads of cultures (the Germanic in the north and the Romantic in the South) and playing an important role in Europe Brussels fits the definition of the archetypal "melting pot", but nonetheless retains its own unique character.
