After joining the European Union in 2007 the country has expanded it’s industrial, technology and service industries. Industrial production includes - steel and pig iron, lead and zinc, copper and aluminium, electronics, vehicle manufacture, energy generation and export. Tourism has also expanded in recent years with increased investment and tourist numbers. Winter visitors are coming to the ski-resorts of Samokov, Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo and summer visitors are flocking to Black Sea locations such as - Sozopol, Nessebur, Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas, and Albena. Many foreigners are also purchasing property in Bulgaria attracted by the low cost of real estate. Some attractions for visitors include: Rila monastery; Black Sea Coastline; St. Alexander Nevski in Sofia; Veliko Tarnovo (The old capital); Roman theatre at Plovdiv;and the winter ski resorts.
