The city lies on the banks of the Nile just south of where the Nile delta forms on its way to the Mediterranean Sea. The early civilization of both ancient Egypt and Cairo was built on the agricultural and transport power of the river and artificial waterways allowed Cairo to expand into the desert. Today, Greater Cairo comprises of various historic towns and modern districts. A journey through Cairo takes a visitor back in time: from the Pyramids, Saladin's Citadel, the Virgin Mary's Tree, the Sphinx, and Heliopolis, to Al-Azhar, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-A'as, Saqqara, the Hanging Church, and the Cairo Tower. Other ancient sites include: Egyptian Museum, on Midan Tahrir; Citadel, in Islamic Cairo; Al-Azhar Mosque; Ibn Tulun, close to Sayidna Zeinab; and The Coptic Museum. A must do activity in Cairo is to take boat trip onboard a felucca along the Nile River. A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat, which normally can carry ten passengers and 2-3 the crew members. They are especially popular among tourists who enjoy the serenity of these sailing craft.
