Capri. Pop. 7,278. Region – Campania. Currency – Euro. Language – Italian. Time Zone – GMT + 1 hour. Nearest Main Airport – Naples International Airport NAP. Average Temperatures 13°C (Jan), 22.7°C (Aug). Best time to go – all year round resort, but very nice weather during May, June and September. The island of Capri is located to the west of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and on the southern side of the Gulf of Naples. The island is part of the Province of Naples and the Italian region of Campania. The City of Capri is the largest town and has two harbours Marina Piccola and the larger Marina Grande, which serves as the main port of the island. Most visitors will land at the Marina Grande either by hydrofoil from Ischia and Forio, or by ferry from Naples and Sorrento. Capri has much to see including: The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) a spectacular cave at the seashore, and Villa Jovis (Villa of Jupiter) built by the Roman emperor Tiberius and the largest of the twelve Tiberian villas on Capri. Arguably the best way of seeing Capri at it’s finest is to put on the hiking boots and take one of the many public footpaths to visit sights such as the "Arco Naturale". If hiking is not the favoured option there are motor scooters for hire, and the chairlift ride up Monte Salaro will give the visitor spectacular views from the summit. At the beginning of April to the end of the summer, the island comes to life from an artistic and cultural point of view. Concerts are organised almost every evening in the squares or in the Tiberian villlas, along with painting and sculpture exhibitions, plays and dance performances.

Capri - wikitravel

Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens, was a favored resort of the Roman emperors. Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his villa on the island, the location (supposedly) of debauched orgies. Those who displeased the emperor were flung to their deaths from the cliffs.
