Caracas is the capital and largest city in Venezuela and is located in the North of the country, near the Venezuelan coastal range (Cordillera de la Costa). Along with other settlements in the northern regions of South America Caracas was colonised and developed by the Spanish and the subsequent cultivation of cocoa led to the growth of Caracas. The discovery of oil in Venezuela led to further expansion of the city and it is now home to Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) which is the one of the largest companys in Venezuela, and negotiates all the international agreements for the distribution and export of petroleum. Other industries include - Chemicals, Textiles, Food, Iron, Wood Products, Rubber and Cement. This city was also the birthplace of two of Latin America's most important figures: Francisco de Miranda and "El Libertador" Simón Bolívar.
