The origins of the caravan in Europe go back to travelling gypsies and showmen who lived in horse drawn caravans. The world's first leisure caravan was built by the Bristol Carriage Company in 1880 and has spawned a modern Caravanning industry which includes Motorhomes, Touring and Static Caravans and Mobile. In North America caravans or travel trailers first appeared in the 1920s and so called “Tin Can Tourists” began to appear on US highways. In the 1930s and 1940s trailers started to become more sophisticated and the House Trailer was born. From the 1950s and 1960s to the present day travel trailers are now classified as a type of RV (recreational vehicle) along with motorhomes, teardrop trailers, and truck campers.
