Chiang Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand, and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located at some 700 km north of Bangkok, and stands on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river. Historically, the city lay on an important trade route and has now developed into the 2nd largest city in Thailand. The city has an impressive backdrop of mountains and is surrounded by lush countryside. It is much greener and quieter than Bangkok, which has led to many people moving to Chiang Hai from the capital.
