Chicago. Pop. 2,873,518. State – Illinois IL. Currency – US Dollar, Language – English. Time Zone – GMT minus 6 hours. Main Airport - O'Hare International Airport. Average Temperatures – minus 4°C (Jan), 24°C (Jul). Best time to go – late spring and early fall. Chicago is the third largest city in the United States and the largest city in the State of Illinois IL, although the state capital is Springfield. The city is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes, and is a major center of transportation, industry, politics, culture, finance, medicine and higher education. Chicago developed its economic importance based largely on trade and transportation from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system and the Southern US States. By the late 19th century Chicago was a main transport hub with – river steamboats, canals, and railroads carrying manufactured goods, grain and agricultural products, and aggregates to all parts of the USA. In the 20th Century Chicago emerged as a financial giant and is now home to a number of Fortune 500 companies and a Dow 30 company – Boeing. Chicago is a very dynamic city with some striking buildings and a spectacular skyline by the shores of Lake Michigan. The downtown area contains many visitor attractions and cultural institutions near the Loop and Michigan Avenue. However, many locals seek their entertainment away from these central locations and it is worthwhile using the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train and bus system to see some of the more outlying neighbourhoods. Chicago has a plethora of attractions for visitors including - Art Institute of Chicago, Brookfield Zoo, Chicago Blues Museum, Garfield Park, Lincoln Park, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sears Tower Skydeck, Shedd Aquarium, University of Chicago, and Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven. For sports fans Chicago is the home of two of the most successful sports teams in the USA - Chicago Bulls (Basketball) and Chicago Bears (Gridiron Football). Interesting Fact – Chicago is know as the Windy City which refers to the breezes from Lake Michigan and not the inaccurate Chicagoan habit of shameless boasting.
