China, or officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a country in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.3 billion and growing. In area it is similar in size to the USA, but has land borders with 14 other nations, whereas the US only has 2. China has a diverse landscape which includes desert areas such as the Gobi in the north and subtropical forests in the wet south. Western China is home to parts of the Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges and the source of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. Eastern China is home to both the Capital and Largest cities – Beijing and Shanghai respectively. China traces its history back some 5000 years to the Xia Dynasty which was followed in succession by other successful dynasties including that of Qin in 221 – 207 BC who constructed the first Great Wall of China to be followed by 3 others in later dynasties – in effect the Great Wall consists of 4 walls built at different periods in China’s history. The Chinese dynasty system ended after the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and the subsequent founding of the Republic of China in 1911. After the Chinese Civil War phase of 1946–1949, the present structure namely the People's Republic of China PRC was setup in in Beijing on 1st October 1949. Major economic reforms were introduced in the late 1970s by Deng Xiaoping, and China developed into a major world economy and is now the 2nd largest in the world – as of 2012 only the USA is ahead of China. For visitors to China wanting to pick up some knowledge of the geography, the country is subdivided into 7 specific regions - Northeast China (Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, with "rust belt" cities, vast forests, and long winters), North China (Shandong, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Yellow River Basin area and historic heartland), Northwest China (Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang, with deserts grasslands, and mountains), Southwest China (Tibet, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou, with spectacular scenery, and popular for backpackers), South-central China (Anhui, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, with river gorges, temperate and sub-tropical forests), Southeast China (Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian a manufacturing powerhouse, and ancestral homeland of most overseas Chinese), East China (Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang China's new cosmopolitan economic center). The attractions and sites available for visitors are endless but some must see places include – Great Wall, Guilin Karst Landscapes, Yangtze River Cruise, Three Gorges Dam, Shanghai Bund, Beijing Forbidden City, Terracotta Army, Maglev Train Pudong International Airport to Shanghai, Leshan Giant Buddha at Sichuan, Grand Canal of China, Hong Kong cityscape, Silk Road, and Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. With such a big country the best time to go is largely influenced by which region you want to visit. However, generally the better times to go are either spring (March to May) or autumn (September to early November). Winters in China’s north and northeast fall between November/December and March/April, and are very cold.
