Bangkok's Chinatown is located on Yaowarat and Charoen Krung Road in the Samphanthawong district. It was set up by Chinese traders who came in junks to trade with Thailand (Siam) during 1700s and is now full of shops and stalls selling an incredible range of goods including - gold, garments, textiles, stationery, souvenirs, second-hand parts and equipment, electric goods, computer parts, antiques, and imported musical instruments. Relatively close to Chinatown is Khaosan road or Khao San road which has developed into a "backpackers' ghetto", with budget accommodation compared to other areas of central Bangkok. The area is also a good starting point to explore other parts of Thailand as many coaches leave directly from Khaosan road.
