Corfu. Capital Corfu. Pop 111,975. A Greek island in the Ionian Sea and lies off the Albanian coast. Corfu is the northernmost island of the group of six Ionian Islands and is approximately 60 km long and 30 km wide at the top of the island. The island has 3 distinct districts – a mountainous north with rocky coves and secluded bays, an undulating centre including Mount Pantocrator at 998 m the highest point of the island, and a low lying south with long sweeping beaches. Several counties have administered Corfu throughout history and visitors will see Greek, Roman, Venetian, French and British influences in its architecture and culture. Corfu is recognised as one of the greenest islands in the Mediterranean and is home to over 3 million olive trees. This attractive climate has led to extensive tourist developments including expensive holiday villas in the North East and self catering complexes in the Southern resort of Kavos.
