It is bordered by Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the south. It's has a Pacific Ocean west coastline, and a Caribbean Sea east coastline. It is hugely popular as an eco-tourism destination due to the extensive range of flora and fauna diversity. For example there 16 species of parrot, 50 species of hummingbird, and approximately 1500 different orchids. The country has 6 regions - Caribbean Costa Rica (relatively isolated but good for sea turtle spotting, Central Valley (main population center), Central Pacific (home to many beaches), Guanacaste (the "dry region" with fabulous beaches and surfing), Plains of the North (mountainous region, famous for the active volcano, Arenal), South Costa Rica (home to the Costa Rican rainforest full of exotic flora and fauna). Main cities include - San José (capital and largest city), Alajuela (location of Juan Santamaría International Airport), Cartago (original capital city), Dominical (large city on South Pacific coast), Heredia (many coffee plantations), Liberia (gateway to the beaches of Guanacaste), Puerto Limón (city on Caribbean coast), Puntarenas (ferry point to Nicoya Peninsula), Quesada (northern city surrounded by hot springs). Along with the spectacular scenery and wildlife many visitors will be drawn to the fantastic beaches – most of the beach tourism is focused on the Pacific side, the Central Pacific region near San José, the Nicoya Peninsula, and in the dry tropical forests of Guanacaste.
