Dead Sea Jordan. Currency – Jordanian dinar (JOD). Time Zone (GMT + 3 hrs). Nearest Main Airport – Amman Queen Alia AMM. Best time to go – spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) avoiding the hottest summer temperatures. The Dead Sea is a salt lake between Jordan and Israel. The sea is 422 metres (1,385 ft) below sea level, which makes is the lowest elevation on the Earth's dry land surface. The sea is 8.6 times more salty than the oceans and it is an environment where only bacteria and microbial fungi are present. The salty conditions make the water very buoyant and is very popular with bathers who have been known to float on the surface whilst reading a book. There are also health spas and hot springs along the shore and therapeutic mud banks which visitors smear onto their skin. Sites to see include: Mount Nebo; Baptism Site at the Jordan River; Madaba 'City of Mosaics'; and Hammamat Ma'in hot springs and waterfalls.
