It was founded in 1869 by a Welsh businessman, John Hughes, who constructed a steel plant and several coal mines in the region. The city is also the centre of heavy industry and coal mines in the Donets Basin (Donbas), a key resource for the whole of Ukraine. In the modern age the city area has 17 coal mines, two concentrating mills, 5 large metallurgical plants , 67 engineering organizations, and 32 food industry organizations. Places to go include - Artema Street, Cathedral Transfiguration of Jesus, Donetsk National University, Statue of Artem (Fyodor Sergeyev), Donetsk Opera & Ballet Theater, Pushkin Boulevard, Monument to John Hughes, and Lenin Square. The city is currently home to two major professional football teams in Ukraine: Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalurh Donetsk. Shakhtar Donetsk became the first Ukrainian club to win the UEFA Cup in 2009, the last year prior to the competition being revamped as the Europa League.
