Dubrovnik. Pop. 50,000. Currency Kuna HRK. Language Croatian. Time Zone GMT + 1 hour. Airport – Dubrovnik DBV. Best Time to go – May to September. Dubrovnik is situated on the extreme southern tip of Croatia. It is one of the top visitor destinations on the Adriatic and it’s iconic old town is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Historically the prosperity of Dubrovnik was built around maritime trade and at one time was a rival to Venice. The shipping trade declined due in part to a catastrophic earthquake in 1667 that killed over 5000 citizens. After this period Dubrovnik came under French and later Austria rule to be followed by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and ultimately Croatia after independence in the 1990’s. In 1991 Dubrovnik was attacked by the by the JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) with a siege of the city that lasted for seven months. After the conflict the city was repaired under UNESCO guidelines. Today the city is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the Croatian tourist industry and it’s old town is arguably the most beautiful attraction on the Adriatic and a rival to Venice.
