Eindhoven has grown from a small village in 1232 to one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, with over 209,179 inhabitants in 2006. Much of its growth is due to Philips and DAF Trucks. The Philips light bulb factory was founded in 1891 by brothers Gerard and Anton Philips, and it is this business that has driven the growth of Eindhoven. Philips have attracted many support hi-tech businesses, and the Philips Stadium is now the home of top Dutch football side – PSV Eindhoven. In contrast to the commercial activity, the city has a vibrant cultural scene with a mix of bars on Market Square, , the Stratumseind (Stratum's End), the Dommelstraat, and the Wilhelmina square. During spring and summer, Eindhoven hosts the Fiesta del Sol, the Virus Festival and the Jazz in Lighttown festival. Official site of football club PSV Eindhoven. PSV are one of the three big football clubs of the Netherlands, the other two being Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam. The club won the European Cup, the predecessor of today's Champions League, in 1988 and is a regular competitor in the current European Champions' League.
The airport is used for both civilian and military traffic. After World War II up until a few years ago, Eindhoven Airport was called Welschap. The airport is expanding it's international destinations.
