Located in the heart of the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is the tenth largest African country by land area and the third largest African nation in terms of population. Ethiopia is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south and Sudan to the west.
Ethiopia is a country situated in the Horn of Africa that has been landlocked since the independence of its northern neighbor Eritrea in 1993. Apart from Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia is bordered by Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Djibouti to the northeast, and Somalia to the east.
Ethiopia has long been an intersection between the civilizations of North Africa, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Unique among African countries, Ethiopia was never colonised, maintaining its independence throughout the Scramble for Africa onward, except for a five-year period (1936-41) when it was under Italian occupation.
Ethiopian Airlines was founded on 30th December 1945, initially with the contractual assistance of TWA. The first planes used by the Airline were five DC-3's. The first international scheduled service was inaugurated between Addis Ababa and Cairo on April 8, 1946.
