Faro City Guide Hotels Accommodation and Travel Information

Faro Algarve Portugal. Pop. 64,500. Currency – Euro. Language – Portuguese. Time Zone GMT 0 Hours. Main Airport - Faro Airport FAO. Best Time to go – Year round destination but good out of season during winter 21st December to 19th March. Faro is situated in the Algarve region of Southern Portugal and is a popular resort for sun-seeking Northern Europeans. The town has a bit of a reputation as a ‘party’ town but it is an excellent base to get off the beaten track and explore the more remote parts of the Algarve. The architecture of Faro and surrounding villages reflects a Moorish influence, originating from the 8th Century when the Moors from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula and occupied much of the territory now covered by modern Spain and Portugal. The Moors were to rule for some 500 years until defeated in 1249 by Portuguese King Afonso III, and Faro evolved into the administrative centre for the whole of the Algarve. Faro with its good port facilities featured prominently in the Portuguese ‘Age of Discovery’ which started around 1297, and the town developed into a commercial and trading hub. Despite an earthquake in 1755 the town has prospered and experienced further economic activity after the opening of Fao Airport in 1965. This opened up the rest of the Algarve region giving access to other locations including – Albufeira, Lagos, Loulé, Portimão and the summer resorts such as - Vilamoura, Praia da Rocha, Armação de Pêra, Alvor, Monte Gordo, Tavira, and Sagres. To accommodate over 7 million tourists per year Faro and the Algarve have a wide range of accommodation types including – package hotel deals in high-rise resorts, short-term apartment rental, guest house, villa rental, 4 and 5 star hotels. Initially most of the early visitors came from the UK – attracted by the beaches, Mediterranean climate, cuisine and relatively low costs. These attractions have been complemented by the construction of some of the best golf courses in Europe and a number of yacht marinas. Following the British other Northern European nationalities, particularly German, Dutch and Scandinavians, have flocked to Faro and The Algarve not just for holidays but to live. The Algarve is also a popular destination for religious tourists on pilgrimages to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piety (best known as the Sovereign Mother) a shrine dedicated to the patron saint of Loulé, or to the apparitions site of Our Lady Mother of Goodness near São Marcos da Serra. Another popular site is the Faro Carmo Church and the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) a 4 x 6 metre chapel built from the bones of over 1,000 Carmelite monks. An exterior view of a 4/5 star quality rental villa in Faro. For larger groups this is a serious alternative to Hotel accommodation, particularly if members of your party are likely to be persistent non-attenders at breakfast time!

Many villas come with pools, heated or on-heated can be negotiated. From a personal perspective, coming from the 'warm' country of Scotland, I rated this pool highly - the ideal cure for hangovers incurred in the bars of Faro or Vilamoura. Image from - © TLD Images

Match Report: The panoramic image below from © TLD Images was taken before the Gibraltar v Scotland Euro 2016 qualifying football played on Sunday 11th October 2015 at the Estádio Algarve. The final score was a comfortable 6 - 0 win for Scotland but with 30 shots and 14 on target a higher goal tally wouldn't have flattered the Scots. Unfortunately, from a Scottish perspective the game was meaningless as Scotland had already failed to qualify for the tournament. The stadium seating, playing surface, and facilities in general were very good. However, the alcohol free beer and luke warm hot dogs were not universally popular with the 10,000 + Scotland football fans aka The Tartan Army. The stadium does not have a lot of nearby facilities shops, bars, public toilets and visitors are advised to pre-book their transport taxi/minibus to and from the venue - particularly if the match or event has a late finish.

Faro - Wikitravel
A popular destination for sun-seekers from northern Europe and the UK, Faro has a reputation as being an overrun party beach town for much of the year. Visitors who use it as a base to explore the more remote areas of the Algarve in the off-season will experience much more of what southern Portugal has to offer; but those looking for no more than a tan and cocktails won't be disappointed. In winter, it is a beautiful, peaceful corner of Southern Europe with plenty of sun bleaching the white-washed town with Iberian and Moorish-influenced architecture.

Estádio Algarve - Wikipedia
The Estádio Algarve is an association football stadium located between Faro and Loulé, in Portugal and the former home of Farense and Louletano, having received some Olhanense and Portimonense matches during their respective stadiums' works of renovation.
