Munich Franz Josef Strauss International Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM) is located 28.5 km (17.7 miles) northeast of Munich, Germany, and is a hub for national carrier Lufthansa and the Star Alliance partner airlines. The airport is located on the territory of three municipalities: Oberding, Hallbergmoos and Marzling. The airport is named after Franz Josef Strauss a famous former president of the state of Bavaria. Munich Airport is the second busiest airport in Germany for passenger traffic (34.73 million in 2008), behind the leader Frankfurt Airport. In 2009, it was named the 2nd Best Airport in Europe and fifth-best in the world by Skytrax, an air transport research company. Ground transportation is mainly provided by the Munich suburban railway lines S1 and S8. The ride takes approximately 45 minutes. Road transport includes Lufthansa Airport Bus and Car via the nearby Motorway A 92, which connects to Motorway A9 and the Munich ring-road system.
