Fuerteventura. The oldest island in the Canaries dating back to a volcanic eruption some 20 million years ago. The island is divided into two parts, the northern region called Maxorata and the southwestern region called The Jandía Peninsula. Tourism is the main industry with fishing and agricultural the main traditional activities. Prinicpal tourist areas include, the towns of Corralejo in the north and Morro Jable in Jandia in the south, plus the tourist development at Caleta de Fuste south of Puerto del Rosario. The island is the least settled in the Canary Islands, which makes it very attractive for more discerning visitors. Fuerteventura is also very popular with surfers, sailors, scuba divers and big game fishermen.
