Galicia. A region in the north west of Spain, which looks out over the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay. The main cities are Vigo, Corunna, Pontevedra, Lugo, Ferrol, Ourense, and Santiago de Compostela. A significant geographical feature of Galicia are fjord-like lochs on the coast. These are called rías and are divided into the Rías Altas, the Rías Medias, and the Rías Baixas. Most of the Galician population live near the Rías Baixas, where several large cities including Vigo and Pontevedra are located. The rias are important for fishing, and make the coast of Galicia one of the most important fishing areas of the world. The city of Vigo is now the largest fishing port in Europe, and the home port of the world's largest fishing company, Pescanova. Vigo has also been chosen to be the HQ of the European Fisheries Agency. The spectacular landscapes and wildness of the Galician coast attract great numbers of tourists. Galicia also has a strong music tradition with bagpipes, accordions, violins, harps and hurdy-gurdies all used for a unique, celtic sound.
